13 Jan 2017. A launch party in Auckland for Philip Morris International’s iQOS heat-not-burn device prompted complaints that the product is forbidden under a 1990 law banning oral tobacco, the New Zealand Herald reported.
A PMI spokesman cited by the newspaper said iQOS is a legal product and the law cited was enacted in the 1990s to combat imports of American-style chewing tobacco. However a heat-not-burn notice on the Ministry of Health website states: “Heat-not-burn products are considered tobacco products for oral use, and as they are not smoked their sale and distribution in New Zealand is prohibited under Section 29(2) of the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990.”
